New unofficial trail in Golden Ears! And I will quote the hike meetup event leader, Hedda...
"I was pleasantly surprised about this trail - the builders did a terrific job clearing and marking it. I had expected a rough route, but instead we got a well-defined trail, quite steep (27% average grade), but easy to follow and without major obstacles."
I agree and would like to elaborate that the local Ridge Meadows Hiking Club has done a wonderful job of flagged a trail that leads up to an Eastern and Western Lookout about 100m elevation from the peak of Mt Nutt South. The lower section moves through a messy second growth forest ravaged by the forestry industry in the 50's I believe, but as you get up on the ridge line you enter old growth and the steepness slacks off making it a gorgeous gradual incline to the twin lookouts.
In order to get to the true south peak, I would have had to do some bushwhacking for over a kilometer and I was already at my turnaround time as we had left at noon… I will be back to complete the GPS track.
The best part of this trip was waiting for the clouds to subside so I could see the entire Golden Ears family of peaks as a mirror image of what you are accustomed to from the lower mainland... Evans in the front... Alouette, Blanchards, Edge, and both Golden Ears dusted with snow. Beautiful.
I plan on making a snowshoe out of this one this winter for sure!
Have fun out there and who knows maybe I will see you on the trails!
Regards, Rex.
