Overwhelming 360-degree views of the stunning mountains in the beautiful Garibaldi park! The challenge of this hike certainly adds to the joy of accomplishment. First, the uneventfull hike to the Garibaldi lake: snow starts soon after the 4km mark and is quite icy, requiring crampons/microspikes or at least snowshoes for comfort. The Barrier Lake is thawed enough at the edges to deter any desire to cross it, and we skirted it along the South side. Walked across the Northern part of the Lesser Garibaldi Lake and gained the summer trail soon after the Taylor Creek. Despite the shade of the forest, the snow was too soft and, tired of postholing, two of us switched from crampons to snowshoes.
Admired the Garibaldi lake and our target for the day, Mnt Price, while taking a break near the shelter. The ridge leading South is somewhat bumpy and thus confusing, but allowing for great views thanks to sparse vegetation. Thanks to some cloud cover, the snow wasn't slushy and felt quite stable. The safest route from the base of Mnt Price was to partially gain the narrow ridge SW of Price first. Of course, we couldn't resist climbing to the top of it as well: a steep hike up where ice axes or poles were of great help. Spent a full hour admiring the incredible views from the summit. Beautiful area worth exploring for more than just one day. Reluctantly started back at 4pm and, after the endless switchbacks, were back to the car with lots of daylight to spare. This great Wandering trip was organized by Ben.
