Cascade pass trail is very famous for the views, or so I heard. This is one of these rare places, where even the road to the trailhead climbs so high up, that it opens to a scenic view. But you can only see something when it is not raining. The road is actually unpaved most of the way and is quite long, but the condition is not too bad. There are warning signs explaining the fact that there are no warning signs, and these signs are repeated every 2-3 miles.

Trailhead is actually marked by another sign that made me quite angry, even though I don’t have a pet or bike. I just don’t like the restrictions. The sign was "NO PETS OR BICYCLES".

Everything else was perfect on this trail. We couldn’t see much at all on Sahale Glacier. It was windy. It was freezing cold. And I mean it literally. And it was snowing. I had not expected this, so I had no hat or gloves. Because of these adverse conditions the only picture of Sahale Arm I got was the one with my arm all frozen up and in snow pointing into some vague direction into the snow.

Later in the day the weather turned to the better, and here by “better” I mean that snow turned into hale and rain. Doubtful lake looked very doubtful indeed. We were doubting our original plans to swim in it. But the island looked so inviting!

Two of us could not resist the temptation.

The blueberries on the island were the tastiest blueberries I have ever had. Far from hungry marmots and bears the island in the middle of this glacial lake is a blueberry paradise. Even though the berries on the lake shores are now still small and sour, the berries on the island are ripe, big and juicy. But they come with a price. I could continue reading »
