Outram is one of the easily identifiable mountains, with a steep north and a gradual south side, and is the highest summit in the Cascade Mountains north of Highway 3. Wanted to get up that mountain for a while, so when Peter organized this Wanderung hike, I gladly joined. Almost expected to see a highway similar to Rubble Creek; on the contrary, the trail through the forest was a peaceful hike on the wonderfully soft trail bed with lush green moss as your surroundings. Still, the alpine was calling, and our group was excited to emerge out of the trees. Wildflowers in the meadows were fading, but snacking on the blueberries compensated for it quite well.

Surprise came in form of fresh snow covering the scree/boulder field, making it a bit more difficult to navigate. Reached the sub-summit and followed the easy scrambling route further north through two notches to the true summit. That required a bit of extra attention given the wet rocks. Windy and cold up there! Well, at least all the snow was on the ground, not falling from the skies. As always, the trip back seemed longer than the ascent, but picking berries and watching ground squirrels kept us entertained. A dinner at the Blue Moose Café in Hope made for an excellent finish to the great day in the mountains.
