Winter is here! Time for those heading into the backcountry to learn or refresh their Avalanche Skills Training. This hike was part of a two-day CWMS course organized by Heather. We learned to identify avalanche-prone slopes and safer routes, dug snow-pack pits, and practiced beacon search and companion rescue.

As for the trail conditions, they improved dramatically since two weeks ago when the surface was sheer shiny ice. Lack of wind, a somewhat porous surface layer and a dusting of fresh snow provided sufficient traction for comfortable snowshoeing. A thick hard crust meant that avalanches were unlikely. And I finally got to practice self-arrest a few times, sliding down the 1st bump!
