Five of us: Dan, Ben, Robert, Marisa, I tried to explore a new Winter route to Guanaco Peak. Our starting point was Zopkios Rest area. This is a different route from the Summer route via Coldwater FSR.
The snow was deep and heavy. After we crossed a bridge over the creek that originates from col on the east ridge of Zupjok Peak, breaking a trail became harder. We got to the col almost after 3 hours which is about 3.5Km distance from the parking lot. Our speed of 1.2Km/hour was slow to finish the rest 5.5Km to the peak.
The forest on the other side of the col was thick and dense. It was not easy to penetrate. After about 2 hours of trying, we called it off. It was not reasonable that we can get to our objective.
There was about 70cm - 1m of fresh snow. I estimated the avalanche risk was considerable to high. There were several slides visible on the north face of Needle Peak.
No. 5 Hwy was a bit of challenge and slippery on the way up. On our way back, the road was completely dry but we saw strange scene of burning white van which packed the coming traffic from a long distance.
