It had been awhile since I last swam, so what better way to ease back into swimming than taking a dip in the river. One of my close friends owns a pair of kayaks and offered to take me out onto the water. The kayak over is actually quite pleasant, along with the scenic trail. There are apparently two routes there; one by a road and another more “scenic” one. The scenic one is a trail that twists through the woods and along the river; it is the one we took both ways.
This is a popular spot, but social distancing is very much possible with everyone claiming their own rocks and trying to find solitude. The water is very much frigid, and although some souls took the plunge into one of the pools, we had opted into just splashing around in the shallows. People bringing marijuana to smoke was the main reason we finally left. As the smoke was not friendly to my companion’s lungs, we wanted to move as quickly as possible to a spot where it would not reach us. Despite the unfortunate end to our splashing, I would return to this area again.
On our paddle back we encountered a heron that let me get remarkably close before gracefully stepping into the depths of the reeds. There was one boat that tried creeping into the river channel that leads toward the widgeon falls campground but I imagine it will not take long before the shallow waters stop them, or they notice the sign that indicated boats are not permitted. The paddle back honestly was the most exhausting part. Since I need glasses to see and opted to have them safely zipped away, the last stretch almost gave me the illusion that I was not moving at all. All the blurry figures remained blurry and any variation in size almost felt lost as a result.
