Jul 23, 2017 Just got back from a 3 day backpack into Kicking Horse on the Heather Trail. 1st night we camped at Buckhorn. Got there late afternoon. Hung out a bit, then did a bit of recon on the upcoming trail after dinner. Still a bit of smoke from all the forest fires partially hiding peak views to both the East and West.
After breakfast, we packed up and headed over to Kicking Horse. Smoke starting to clear and views much better. Meadows are spectacular right now! Got to Kicking Horse in the early afternoon (we're not fast hikers!) and after setting up camp, did a bit of recon on the trail towards Nicomen Lake. Found a great place to watch the sunset from and only about 10-15 minutes or so from KH. So after dinner, hung out swatting bugs (yes, tons of bugs! Eventually gave in and donned headnets when not moving around) and then headed over for sunset pics at aforementioned spot.
Next morning, packed up after brekky and headed back to Buckhorn. Took our time enjoying meadows and taking lots of pics. Went up 1st Brother for a nice lunch break on the way and then continued on to Buckhorn. REALLY buggy that night and a few light showers.
Got up, ate a quick brekky (still headnetting it during meals, etc) and back to the car a bit before lunch. Great trip! If you want to backpack and see the flowers at their peak, and we did, ya gotta know there's gonna be a bug price to pay! Still scratching bites 3 days later! But totally worth it. And day hikers don't pay nearly the same price. Just a bit of annoyance when you stop for lunch.
Go. The hills are alive with the sound of music....
