I hadn't considered doing this trail, and now I think it makes for a pleasant morning's hike. It's not all on trails - there's a section on paved road - and there aren't any views to speak of, but it takes in some lovely old-growth forest in Nelson Canyon and the uppermost set of falls on Cypress Creek that I hadn't seen before.
And those falls are spectacular! Wow - was I ever unprepared for that. Better than the lower sets of falls? Maybe - certainly more dramatic as you can get (dangerously) close to them and their drenching spray. With the falls roaring, the viewpoint was very slick. Be aware that the terrain is precipitous here and a fall would likely be fatal as you'd be swept downstream into the canyon. An added bonus feature is the view of the old car wreck on the opposite slope...
The route is easy going as it mostly follows old logging roads. A bit of mud along the first section by Nelson Creek, and some parts were wet and slippery. But I was surprised at how much distance and elevation we gained.
We started at the Whyte Lake/Nelson Creek parking lot and followed the TCT north and then eastwards towards Cypress Creek, crossing Eagle Creek along the way. Once we hit Eagle Lake access road, we followed that down the hill until a bridge over Cypress Creek where we turned right and went down to the falls viewpoint. From there we backtracked to the main road and followed it along until it joined another old logging road, which we hiked back to the Nelson Creek section of the TCT.
Bring a map as there are a number of trail intersections to note! The North Shore map from Trail Ventures BC is excellent. My GPS maps also had the main trails marked which helped. (Ignore the wrong turn up alongside Cypress Creek on the GPS track!)
Not much to report flower and wildlife-wise. I spotted a dipper by the falls, and we heard a few varied thrushes. Salmonberry was just coming into bud.
