Buntzen Lake is a reservoir that is maintained by BC Hydro. Its natural setting and many adjacent trails make it a popular destination all year round. Today we completed the Buntzen Lake Loop Trail in 2.5 hours for a total distance of 10.4 km with an elevation gain of 279 m. The temperature was a brisk 3-C and overcast. The overnight temperatures caused some ice patches to remain along the trail but not enough that micro spikes were required.
We started at the east side of South beach, near the off-leash dog park and headed North, passing some viewpoints and lake access points along the way. As we arrived at Powerhouse Road we veered left and back onto the trail. This section is a steep downhill gravel path that snakes its way to the North Beach Picnic area so caution is necessary to not slip on the loose gravel. As you arrive at North Beach, take a moment to look across to the South side of the lake. Make your way across the beach where you will arrive at the suspension bridge. Cross the bridge to the other side where the trail will take you through some open areas underneath the powerline. It is here you will have beautiful views of the surrounding mountains before you head into a mature forest. Views of the lake are limited as the trail meanders through the forest and the tall trees. You will cross several bridges that run over a number of creeks as you make your way to Pumphouse Road. Continue to walk along the road until you arrive at the floating bridge. Cross the floating bridge and follow the trail back to South Beach and the main parking lot.
The Buntzen Lake Trail is well marked and can be completed all year. I rate it as an easy hike, although some individuals may find the 10.4 km challenging.
