After completing a section of the trail at the north end of the Atsion to Batsto trail, I wanted to hike in from the south end to determine the condition of the trail after being told it may be flooded. It turns out I was well advised, the southern section of the trail was completely underwater in addition to the bridge being heavily damaged (see photos in my Dec 26 post).
Instead of following the trail out to Constable Bridge, we elected to follow the fire road. With an arctic front settling in on the region, it was a brisk morning with a stiff breeze. However, once we were in the shelter of the pines and moving, the cold air became more tolerable and we settled into an enjoyable hike. We followed the fire road up to Constable Bridge and crossed the river so I could check the condition of another small bridge. At this end of the south section, the trail was passable and the bridge was in good condition...just a small note for me to remember for a later hike.
From Constable Bridge, we followed the fire road towards Quaker Bridge for about half a mile until cutting across to Batsto Lake at which point we followed the lake back to Batsto Village. An enjoyable hike for a Sunday morning.
