I've done a number of night hikes before back in the flat forests of New Jersey, but this is the first since moving back to the west coast. The weather was significantly better than the last time I hike Elk, and the views were what I remember so well from hiking in BC in decent weather.
The flowers are coming into full bloom in the alpines and gave a carpet of colour to accent the spectacular peaks. Just enough snow is left at the top of Elk to require a light jacket if you are staying for a bit.
The descent back into the forest was surreal, dropping us into darkness broken only by small flashes of light peak through the trees from the valley below, and our headlamps. I think, overall, this is a type of hiking that will be added to all the attending members repertoires.
