Elevation done: 450m
A little gem of a hike, I don't understand why this isn't in any of the guide books. While the first half of the hike is on the uninspiring Lions logging road, the second half follows a much nicer moss-covered road. Not only that, but it's level, gaining the remaining elevation to the bluffs very gradually. The trail is well signposted and obvious to follow with the exception of the last 50 m or so, but by then the bluffs are in sight and it's only a short bushwhack through knee-high salal to get there.
And what a treat of a view! A full 180 degree sweep from Mt Harvey round to Leading Peak on Anvil Island, unobstructed by trees. Howe Sound lies 700 m below your feet... In my view, this is way up there as one of the best shoulder-season hikes in the Vancouver area, and would probably be OK in winter (the trail is that obvious, though care would obviously be needed once on the bluffs!).
We started in Lions Bay so the elevation gain is slightly less than quoted in the description above (probably nearer 500 m). Round trip distance is about 11 km.
Magnesia Creek was straightforward to cross, but it would still be easy to end up filling your boots with water. Gaiters would help. Yahoo Creek was easier as it's narrower. Minimal blowdown, but what's there is being left in place to prevent dirtbikers spoiling the trail, so don't be tempted to clear it :-)
