We tried the newer route from West Bay rd. It's much nicer and better marked than the old one. We walked about 2km along the Maple trail till it crossed the Whispering creek. Then we ascended along the Mt. Killam trail to the viewpoint at 720m elevation. The views were gorgeous indeed!
A few things to keep in mind:
1. The small boat to Gambier can be a bottleneck. It was almost full on Sunday evening. Please keep your group size small!
2. The trailhead to Mt. Killam (N49° 28.526' W123° 25.488') is easy to miss. It is on your right just before the Maple trail crosses the creek for the 2nd time.
3. There were lot's of fallen trees at 450m elevation; it's easy to loose the trail there.
See our GPX track. We were inspired by http://forums.clubtread.com/27-british-columbia/71114-mt-killam-trail-run.html .
