SUMMARY: A very rarely used BCMC hut with gorgeous views of the Sky Pilot group and Howe Sound. Area was used extensively in mining activities, so there is a lot of 'artifacts' around. Maybe an old tunnel nearby.
The Mountain Lake Hut is a small, arched-construction wooden shelter build in 1970 that sleep comfortably 4 people. From the hut, one can reach the summit of Mount Sheer in 1.5 hours. It is also possible to continue towards Skypilot and Ledge Peaks. Some people have also reached Ben Lomond and Red Mountain via a very steep traverse.
Went out with a party of seven and had a great time. The snow started when the trail turns off the deactivated logging road. Took about 4.5 hours to make it up. About half the group had snowshoes. Once there a few of us went out searching for the tunnel we had read about on bivouac. We found it about thirty minutes away from the hut. Was pretty neat to crawl around and look at the old piping and valves built into the cement plug. When we returned to the cabin we discovered another party of six had showed up. So it was a pretty warm and packed night at the hut. After a lazy morning we made it down in about two and half hours and had the obligatory meal at Howe Sound!
