We had hiked to Elk viewpoint a few times when we first started hiking a few years ago but never went to the peak, let alone to Thurston so this was a new experience for us despite being on the trail before. The trail was in great shape as usual, even despite the all day downpour the previous day. As we ascended, we reached a cloud belt in the forest which made for some chilly temperatures but also some great pictures as the sunlight hit the clouds through the trees. Reaching the Elk viewpoint about 600m elevation gain from the trail head, the clouds cleared a bit towards the valley so we managed to get a little bit of a view while we had a snack break. As we reached the peak of Elk and headed along the ridge towards Thurston, we got above a cool cloud inversion to see some majestic views of Mcguire, Tomyhoi and Border Peaks amidst the clouds. Also managed to get some peak-a-boo views of Slesse, Macfarlane and Rexford at points as the clouds swirled. No snow at all on the trail yet, even at the peak of Thurston so that was a plus. Enjoyable day out on the trail, especially after being stuck inside the day before in the pouring rain.
